Elon Musk has introduced a groundbreaking prototype of the Tesla Roadster 2, equipped with SpaceX-developed rocket thrusters, potentially paving the way for flying cars. The demonstration, held in Texas, showcased the electric sports car using its thrusters to perform aerial maneuvers, including rolls and complex movements, before landing safely. Although the vehicle’s flying capabilities are not intended for public road use, the event highlighted Musk’s ambitious vision of integrating electric vehicle technology with aerospace advancements.
Musk described the Roadster 2 as a potential flying car, emphasizing its ability to use altitude controls and rear-mounted thrusters for aerial feats. The demonstration was conducted remotely to minimize safety risks, as Musk acknowledged that the vehicle might face legal challenges in various jurisdictions.
While the Roadster 2 is expected to enter production in 2028 with a price tag exceeding $200,000, Tesla has also hinted at different versions of the vehicle. These include a high-performance model and a specialized variant featuring a thrust system. Additionally, a single-seat rocket version with a full flight system is proposed, available by invitation only.
Tesla has cautioned that the vehicle’s flying capabilities are not intended for use on public roads, underscoring the significant considerations of safety requirements and regulatory approval. This demonstration underscores Musk’s continued efforts to push the boundaries of automotive and aerospace technologies, though practical implementation remains a challenge.
