During a visit to Ecuador, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced plans for the United States to enhance collaboration with its Latin American allies in the fight against drug trafficking. Rubio highlighted that Washington is actively pursuing agreements for joint operations with countries such as Ecuador and Colombia. These partnerships will focus on operations within territorial waters, adhering to local laws.
This statement comes as the US continues its military campaign targeting boats suspected of involvement in drug trafficking. The latest operation in the Caribbean Sea resulted in three fatalities, contributing to a reported total of at least 230 deaths from 69 operations since the initiative launched in September 2025. Rubio noted that future strikes would be evaluated individually, based on the threat level and the vessel’s location.
Emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation, Rubio stated that working closely with local governments could significantly disrupt and potentially dismantle drug-trafficking routes. This approach marks a shift from previous unilateral actions by the US, which had drawn criticism. The Trump administration had faced backlash for targeting vessels associated with individuals it labeled as “narco-terrorists.”
