Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has promised decisive action to safeguard the country’s national interests amid newly imposed U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. Addressing provincial and territorial leaders in Charlottetown, Carney assured that his administration is steadfast in its commitment to back Canadian workers, farmers, businesses, and families facing heightened trade tensions with the United States.
The promise of support follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s declaration of an additional 50% tariff on certain Canadian products, including specific dairy items, alcoholic beverages, motor vehicles, and related goods. These tariffs are slated to come into effect on August 19, escalating the trade conflict between the two neighboring countries.
Carney has strongly criticized the fresh tariffs, labeling them as a breach of the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and characterizing them as another instance of unilateral trade actions by the U.S. government. The Canadian Prime Minister emphasized his disapproval of these measures, which he believes undermine the spirit of the trade agreement.
Despite the current dispute, Carney revealed that he had a recent conversation with President Trump, during which both leaders agreed to ramp up trade negotiations. This commitment aims to address and possibly reconcile the ongoing differences between Canada and the United States, exploring avenues for resolution.
