India is actively engaging with U.S. authorities to tackle concerns stemming from recent changes in American visa regulations that could impact Indian students and academic visitors. According to External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, who addressed the media on Friday, New Delhi is closely observing the developments and will persist in addressing any issues with Washington whenever Indian nationals encounter difficulties.
The alterations, introduced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, enforce stricter residency guidelines for holders of F, J, and I category visas, which are designated for international students, exchange visitors, and media professionals. This revised framework imposes specific durations of stay for non-immigrant visa holders in these categories, replacing the previous system that allowed many to remain in the United States for indefinite periods without continuous federal oversight.
One significant aspect of the new regulations is the reduction of the grace period for F visa holders after completing their studies. Where students once had 60 days to leave the country, transfer to another institution, or adjust their immigration status, they now only have 30 days to do so. This change is part of a broader effort by U.S. authorities to tighten immigration controls and ensure compliance with visa conditions.
Indian officials have underscored that while visa and immigration policies fall under the jurisdiction of sovereign nations, they remain committed to advocating for Indian citizens and mitigating any challenges posed by the updated rules.
